’tis the season when bedtime stories get very Christmassy so it’s always great to have some new picture books in your sack to add a touch of cheer to the Christmas-sleep countdown. These are three my daughters and I have been enjoying over the festive season – each one a very different style!
Merry Whatmas? by Eoin McLaughlin & Polly Dunbar
What exactly is Christmas all about? It’s hard for Hedgehog and Tortoise to know, especially when it’s their very first Christmas. Luckily, their forest friends know all about it…or do they? For Fox it’s all about the presents. For Badger, it’s treats. For Magpie, it’s singing. And for Squirrel, Mouse and Rabbit, it’s something else entirely! With mayhem and madness afoot in Polly Dunbar’s magical wonderland, Hedgehog and Tortoise begin to think Christmas is…well, all a bit too much! From the creators of ‘The Hug’, this book is a warm christmassy cuddle of a book!
Dasher Can’t Wait for Christmas by Matt Tavares
This gorgeous picture book has a gloriously traditional feel with Matt Tavares’s timeless storytelling and classic style. Dasher is counting sleeps to Christmas and, like many little ones at this time of year, she is starting to get impatient and over-excited. Unable to resist the call of Christmas carols and twinkling tree lights, Dasher is drawn out into the night on Christmas Eve…and because the snow-laden sky obscures the North Star from view, she’s unable to find her way home. But one lucky boy is about to meet one of Santa’s reindeer and, not only does he have carrots, he has exactly what Dasher needs to get back to the North Pole in time to deliver the presents!
