Hannah and the Violin by Satoshi Kitamura

At first, you would be mistaken into thinking this is a simple story with few words and straightforward illustrations.

It is so much more. Listen and you will be able to find the joy in the sound of nature all around us.

When Hannah finds a leaf, she thinks it looks like a violin and begins to play. As she does, a bird begins to sing along. Soon other birds join in, and the insects from the flowerbeds until everyone and everything form a wonderful orchestra. Until the moment someone sings to Hannah.

I particularly love the way the illustrations tell the story, the use of white space at the beginning and the simplicity of the drawings changing into pages full of life and energy as the size of Hannah’s orchestra increases.

What an absolutely beautiful story of dreams, music, nature, family and belief.
