Pandora and The Story Forge by Gaynor Andrews & Marie-Alice Harel

I recently had the pleasure of diving into Pandora and the Story Forge, the gorgeous debut picture book by Gaynor Andrews, and I have to say, it’s an enchanting read. Whether you’re a parent, a teacher, or just a lover of beautifully illustrated stories, this is one to add to your collection.

The story begins with Pandora, a lover of language who collects words and sounds and  crafts them into stories to be sent into the world.

“The story-starved children are waiting, my dears.
You word-hammered shields – go! Protect them from fears.
And you, cosy blanket-tales, storytime shawls,
You’re needed most when the night-darkness falls.”

As you’ll see from the quote above, Gaynor’s storytelling is poetic, lyrical and filled with a sense of wonder that’s sure to captivate young readers. And they are delicious to read aloud too.

Marie-Alice Harel lush illustrations have a dreamlike quality that perfectly complements the magical setting and the swirling whirling words on the page.  The colour and texture draws you into Pandora’s world, making the story forge feel like a place you could almost step into.

While this books begins with Pandora, it ends with the reader who, inspired by the beauty of language, goes on to create their own tales.

Pandora and the Story Forge is the perfect choice for a bedtime story, a quiet afternoon read, or to kickstart a discussion about language and storytelling. Just beautiful.
