Ten Little Penguins by Mike Brownlow & Simon Rickerty

Ten little penguins live happily in the ice, but one day their granny gets sick so they all go out to find a gift to cheer her up! In every spread, each little penguin finds something different. Number ten finds a hat, and now there are nine. ‘Peep’! Number nine finds a fish, and now there are eight. ‘Peep’! All the way we go to the last one, but number one is a bit sad. He couldn’t find anything, but he still has something very special within to give his granny. That you must find out for yourself.

This fun page-turning rhyming adventure is one of those great books to read aloud, and perfect for bedtime! The counting down factor is something that winds us up, because we want to find out what happens, and then it winds us down…because we know there is a predictable ending. Once you reach number one, that’s it!

The illustrations are so striking and fun to look at, I love the patterns and colours against the dark bold outline.

One could think that this style would make the illustrations a bit less dynamic, but on the contrary! Every spread is so full of exciting elements and little things to look at that your eye doesn’t stop a single moment making it really appealing and joyful.

The delightful bright colours and different patterns of each penguin make them look like sweeties. Hmmm jelly penguins. This makes it all more exciting to look at. I found myself picking my favourite penguin from the get go, and then rooting for him to get a good gift but also hoping that he lasted through the pages till number one. My favourite spread scene was the chicks in a pillow fight with feathers everywhere! Plus the eye-catching glittery holographic cover is a sensorial joy.

Ten Little is a book series, and there are another ten books to have fun with!

Ten little books come to Tita’s library! Tita says ‘Peep! let’s read!’
