Trick or Treat By Catherine Emmett and Laura Brenlla

Catherine Emmett ensures we will never think of ‘trick or treat’ in the same way again!

Down a ‘twisty, turny path,’ through a ‘winding, wailing wood,’ in a ‘creepy, creaky house,’ lives a witch.

In her quest to cast a spell to sniff out an ogre, one important ingredient is missing – a little girl.

Broomsticks, cats and cauldrons appear, and we are firmly in the world of witches alongside a little girl who believes everyone wears a costume at Halloween.

A surprise ending tricks us all and you can see who likes the green treats best.

This ‘treat’ of a Halloween story left me smiling as broadly as the little girl in the story did.

It is a joy to read ‘Trick Or Treat’ aloud. Catherine Emmett plays with fun alliterations to give us all the ingredients of a witch’s spell.

Remember – don’t believe everything is it appears to be.

The illustrations, in suitably Halloween inspired hues, are full of bold humour,

I particularly enjoyed the expressions on the little girl’s and the witch’s faces, providing wonderful characterisation.

This is the perfect recipe for Halloween: pumpkins, spiders, frogs, bats and everywhere, spooky eyes in the dark.

A good book to read on a dark and spooky night, but who will get the biggest fright?
