Guest Post: Natascha Biebow… The Crayon Man

Pick up a Crayola crayon (not an i-pad, a smartphone or a mouse). Yes, do!

Any colour. Which one do you like best? (For me, Periwinkle Blue.)

Did you know that the man who invented them was inspired by nature?

Yes, he had a garden full of beautiful flowers (and vegetables) by the sea.
He even brought beautiful bouquets into the office.

Edwin Binney (the inventor) loved nature’s colours so much that he decided he would invent some crayons so children everywhere could draw anything.

And he did. He sold the first Crayola crayons in a bright green box for only a nickel. That was in 1904.

Today, we have white boards, i-pads, smartphones – we barely even need to reach for a pen to write anything down on paper. It’s easy to be disconnected from the outdoors.

But go on, look outside. See all the amazing colours in nature!

What will you doodle? THE CRAYON MAN: THE TRUE STORY OF THE INVENTION OF CRAYOLA CRAYONS, illustrated by Steven Salerno, is a true story. Yes, really.
