The Secret Hen House Theatre is an engrossing debut novel from writer Helen Peters.
This novel, ideally suited to readers aged 10+, has a timeless quality to it. Helen Peter’s wonderful narrative – the tone, atmosphere, sense of adventure – evokes fond memories of the novels I devoured when I was younger.
The Secret Hen House Theatretakes place on the farm belonging to Hannah’s family. She lives there with her ever distracted Dad who hasn’t quite recovered from the death of his wife years ago. His main focus is the farm – he is tirelessly dedicated to its animals, and making ends meet.
Hannah has a talent. She thinks she got it from her mum. Plays. She loves writing them, performing them and directing them. When a locally run competition asks for entries she leaps on the opportunity – with help and encouragement from her friend Lottie.
They set about transforming the old hen house into a wonderful theatre. They face obstacles which test their friendship, and from which Hannah must make some crucial decisions.
The Secret Hen House Theatre encapsulates that wholesome, child centred quality of novels which gave children a strong voice and sense of purpose in an adult dominated world.
A strong plot, wonderful characters and enthralling narrative – My Book Corner highly recommends this novel. You’ll love it!
