Rebel Dogs! Heroic Tales of Trusty Hounds, by Kimberlie Hamilton, is an engaging book for doggy fans packed with tales of trusty hounds and canine facts – so many opportunities for ‘Did you know…?’
The tales of doggy derring-do were so engagingly written, I was hooked and read it cover to cover. The usual suspects like Laika the first dog in space and warfare dogs were joined by fascinating tales of dogs like Nipper, the ‘His Masters Voice’ iconic dog; Oddball who protected penguins in Australia, and Rin Tin Tin, the early Hollywood superstar.
Having a team of seventeen illustrators produced a fantastic variety of styles and interest on the full-page profile pictures.
My minor quibble was that my favourite dog story from childhood – Gelert the faithful hound killed by her master Llywelyn – didn’t make the cut …Maybe there’ll be a sequel!
But did you know…Tutankhamen had a saluki, or that dogs have eighteen muscles in their ear? I am so ready for the next ‘Dog’ round at the school quiz.
