The 1st of December can’t come quick enough for me. Each year. As soon as we are in to December, up goes our tree. Mince pies, a Christmas movie and tree decorating; baubles spill out over the floor as we put it together – then slump exhausted into the chairs to admire our creation. A joint effort, without a doubt.
Patricia Toht and Jarvis’s latest picture book, Pick A Pine Tree recreates that wonderful yearly event with aplomb. It’s gorgeous.
Toht’s narrative, with smooth rhyme and rhythm takes us through the joy of picking out the right tree. The perfect one…
‘Long, straight limbs
or branches bent –
mmm! Just smell
that piney scent!’
Our lovely family plop it atop a bright yellow car, then take it home – where the fun begins.
Jarvis’s illustrations adorn the beautifully thick, matte pages. Each double page spread conveys the festive excitement bubbling over as the tree takes shape – adding lights, hanging trinkets and choosing what to put on the top. With friends and family joining in, it’s a wonderfully chaotic atmosphere full of cheer.
Pick A Pine Tree is a wonderful festive treat.
