Flight by David Long and Terri Po

A book that will give its readers wings and encouragement to not only dream, but to fly.

Flight is a book full of inspiring people; stories of courage, invention, ingenuity, determination and most of all, dreams.

Written in a chronological and easy-to-read style, each chapter deals with an event in history related to flight. From the very first story of Brother Elmer (or should that be Oliver?) and his home-made wings to space travel for all in the future, this is a celebration of remarkable achievements.

From competitions to fly further and faster than ever before for huge amounts of prize money to the demand for aeroplanes for war, and rockets to go into space, the challenges of designing these machines are ever changing.

A truly international theme, this book takes us, via the lives of these aviators around the world.

The story of the famous female aviator, Amelia Earhart, is included alongside those of Katherine Stinson, Queen Bess, the Spitfire ‘Attagirls’ and the first female fighter pilots.

There are many famous names you will recognise, for example, the Wright Brothers as well as those such as Alan Pollock, who are perhaps less well-known.

The inclusion of not only aeroplanes but balloons, zeppelins, helicopters, gliders and rockets makes this a wonderful and inspiring collection.

The final chapter deals with the thought-provoking issue of space travel and its effects on the environment now and in the future.

As the author states, ‘Watch this space, because whatever happens next in aviation, it definitely won’t be boring.’

Terri Po’s engaging illustrations are a delight. Each page, with its illustrated headers and footers are clear, bright and welcoming.
