Emma Dodd

Emma Dodd - InterviewHUGEST welcome to illustrator Emma Dodd.

I kinda fell in love with her picture book The Entertainer, and simply had to invite Emma over.

Just remember, please don’t tell anyone about her most embarrassing moment …

Tell us about you in 25 words or less.

Designers’ daughter; mother of two amazing children; very much in touch with my inner child; never seen in public or private without my lippy on; surfer; walker…

What makes you happy?

My children and husband, my friends, my dog, my job, walking, surfing, Cornwall, Northumberland, Italy, eating, scrabble, Radio 4, laughing.

Where have you always wanted to visit, but haven’t made it to … yet?

I’ve always wanted to visit Rome. I love history and have always been rather obsessed with the Ancient Romans and I love all things Italian.

The graphic novel A Roman Rescue, which I created with author Kelly Gerrard, was set in Ancient Rome and researching it made me want to go there even more.

Where is your favourite place to create your illustrations?

I create my illustrations in my head while I am walking my dog, Buzz, in the beautiful countryside around my home town. I then commit them to paper in my studio, which is on the first floor of my house.  It’s very peaceful, extremely messy, and I listen to Radio 4, speaking books or music while I work.

What’s the best thing about being a published illustrator?

Well, I often feel I have the best job in the world. I’m flexible with my time, which allows me to be there when my children need me.

Despite having published a good many books to date, I still get the same thrill when my advance copies arrive, or I see one of my books in a shop window or a museum book shop. Best of all, I get to draw pictures all day. What’s not to like?

What’s the strangest question you’ve ever been asked?

“Will you marry me?” and I replied “Yes.”

Who or what inspires you?

My children are a huge source of inspiration. I also walk most days with an author friend, and we bounce ideas off each other which is great. Then there are the amazing illustrators and authors out there, some of whom I have admired since childhood and some of whom are much younger than me, whose work inspires me. Oh.. and my naughty puppy, Buzz. He gives me loads of ideas.

What is your worst habit?

I’m a bit of a worrier, and I apologise too often. Sorry! Oh, and reading my amazon reviews and memorising the bad ones.

Your favourite word?

“Fabulous” because it’s fabulous.

What is on your TBR pile?

So many books. I couldn’t even start to list them. I do listen to speaking books while I work, but the pile still grows.

Your most embarrassing memory?

Well, I was in two minds as to whether to share this with you.. but… when I was doing trampolining at school, I did a front drop and farted, in front of my whole class! (Blushes deep crimson)

Did we forget anything?

I don’t think so, it’s been fun. Please don’t tell anyone about ‘you know what.’
