Clap When You Land is a truly stunning read from the author of Poet X, Elizabeth Acevedo.
Acevedo has created a fast-moving, absorbing verse novel which delves into the very different lives of half-sisters Camino and Yahaira. Camino lives in the Dominican Republic, Yahaira lives in New York. Both are unaware they share a Papi, until he is killed in a plane crash while travelling between the two.
The blank verse format allows Acevedo to really pull out the emotions of this – the shock, the struggle for identity and the acceptance of a new family. There are some great stand out scenes, and we really feel for Camino as she struggles to be true to herself and her own desires.
A powerful, engaging and absorbing exploration of family, identity and culture.
