Black Girl Power edited by Leah Johnson

Black Girl Power is an anthology of fifteen stories edited by award-winning author Leah Johnson.

From the very first words of the introduction, the reader is  invited into this world where it is okay to rejoice in the strength and power you have inside yourself.

The variety of genres, from everyday life, (‘The New Rules’ by Elise Bryant) to vampires (‘First Bite’ by Dhonielle Clayton) and bringing friends of differing cultures together (‘Rice and Beans, Rhythm and Beats by Ibi Zoboi’) ensures there is something to suit every reader.

I loved the voices, the warmth and richness of the descriptions of life as a young person today.

There is humour such as in Karen Strong’s ‘The Witch in Apartment 2B’.

This is a book to help readers realise they are not alone in their feelings. It is a book for all and one which celebrates community, see ‘One of those Days’ by Natasha Díaz.

I could go on, but I urge you to read, enjoy and share this inspiring and entertaining collection of short stories.
