The Imaginary

A. F. Harrold and Emily Gravett have created a perfectly charming illustrated novel.

The Imaginary really is something quite special.

The hardcover edition of The Imaginary comes resplendent in a fabulous jacket … but the joy doesn’t stop there. Lift the cover to take a peek underneath too. Oh, and then reveal in those endpapers … yep, Gravett’s illustrations are a wonderful, wonderful feature of this novel.

The narrative itself is just as exciting. Harrold has delved into the world of imaginary friends, with an inspired twist.

What if these imaginary friends hold a power?

A power that is sought by a most unscrupulous character?

Have you ever pondered where imaginary friends gather when they are not being, well, imagined?!

Harrold’s novel is full of entertaining twists and turns as it follows Rudger, the imaginary friend of young Amanda. There’s the strange Mr Bunting in Bermuda shorts and a ‘quivering moustache’ who keeps appearing at the wrong moments, and who is that sad looking girl who is always next to him? The one that Amanda’s mum can’t see …

Harrold’s collection of complex and intriguing characters are brilliantly portrayed.

When an accident puts Amanda in hospital (and yes, the moustached man was there), Rudger is left to fend for himself. He is faced with a race against time, because imaginary friends really are reliant on those who imagine them in the first place.

The plot is wonderfully imagined, with plenty of intriguing twists and elements to pull readers in to an incredibly absorbing storyline. Of course, top kudos to Harrold for those wonderful descriptions of libraries too!

‘It’s the best sort of indoors there is for a rainy day. Every book is an adventure,’

Beautiful to hold, exciting to read … The Imaginary is perfect present material for readers aged  9+.
