Filled with subtle humour, endearing characters and a peculiar charm all of its own – Amanda and Her Alligator by picture book legend Mo Willems is a perfect picture book for My Book Corner.
Firstly, this chapter book is divided in to chapters – 6 and a half of them to be precise. My Book Corner likes books which try, and succeed, in being a little bit different – after all, as parents we end up reading them multiple times and variety is good!! From a literacy point of view, this is a great way of introducing the concept of chapters to your young audience.
My Book Corner loved the humour in this book, its there without the feeling that Mo is trying too hard. I like that.
The 6 and a half chapters tell the story of Amanda and her alligator – personal favourite is the chapter entitled ‘A Surprising Value’ where Alligator learns he came from the bargain bin!
Each chapter is short, manageable and linked to the previous one. Alligator learns to share, and accept new comer Panda.
Short snappy sentences, great dialogue and deceptively simple illustrations mean this will also be great for newly independent readers.
