A Dot In The Snow is the heart thumping beautiful picture book from Corrinne Averiss and Fiona Woodcock.
Miki doesn’t want to stay with his mum and look for fish in the icy waters, it looks hard and Miki isn’t ready. He bounds off in to the snowy landscape, where before long he spots a dot in the distance. Closer inspection of this strange red dot reveals it has a twinkly face and makes a great ‘gurgling sound.’ Averiss’s descriptions really do capture Miki’s character brilliantly.
A new friendship is born. Miki and the little girl have much fun in the snow, and when the ‘red thing’ from her hand falls into the ice… Miki’s previous fears are forgotten and he dives straight in to help his friend.
They continue to play until another dot emerges, when the new dot turns in to his friend’s mum Miki begins to miss his own. Where can she be? He can spot a dot in the sea…
Averiss’s narrative is wonderfully slow and gentle, the calm pace celebrates the friendship that emerges from this unlikely duo. Woodcock’s atmospheric illustrations reflect the calmness of Averiss’s words. Woodcock’s colour palette is soft and enchanting adding a wonderful magical atmosphere to this picture book.
A Dot In The Snow is a wonderful snowy treat, and is a featured title in our Best Christmas Books for Children.
